A Mighty Fortress Is Our God
Reformation Vespers was attended by 22 people who fed on the Word of God, and offered their prayers, praise and thanksgiving, to mark this once in a life time occasion. Rev. Michael Wallace, pastor of Gethesame Lutheran Church in Lakewood, graciously served as Lector.
Following the Service people met in the community room for a time of fellowship. It seems that no one was in a hurry to leave, but was relishing this precious time together.
One of the most striking moments for me was when I was discussing our new crucifix with one of the worshipers who had not been in our church before. I was explaining that though the death of Christ is historically in the past, it is an ever present reality for us. In the words of Revelation 14:6 "the everlasting Gospel." At that point my friend said, "A mighty fortress."
How perceptive! For it is of Christ crucified that we sing: A mighty fortress is our God. He is our defense, the one by whom we prevail against all mortal ills, against sin, death and Satan. God be praised who gives us the victory in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 7:25)
